New research into bollard bicycle safety
Cycling is becoming more and more popular all around the world. Many governments are doing more to promote it as well, including the creation of cycle infrastructure. However, there are issues with safety in many situations. Some become more serious when you consider changes in bicycles to improve the speed and the popularity of cargo bikes. It makes it more important to use things like bollards properly.
A crucial thing to think about before choosing a style of bollard is the impact on bicycle safety. It can vary massively; there are higher risks of injury with some styles.
New research
New findings from Germany's DEKRA, one of the largest vehicle testing specialists in the world, gives a clearer idea of the safety risks. They did tests using a three-wheel e-cargo bike travelling at 25km/h (15.5mph). One test had the bike strike a rigid bollard. A second instead struck a flexible post. As a result, they could do an effective comparison of the results.
The impact with the rigid post was far more severe. There was strong deceleration, throwing the crash test dummy into the handlebars. This alone would result in serious injury. In addition, the post buckled, causing the bike to lift and tip, throwing the dummy. The fall would also cause massive injuries.
The results of the test with the flexible post couldn't have been more different. There was hardly any impact, with the bike knocking the bollard over, rolling over it, and continuing with little slow down. There was no significant impact on the dummy; it did not leave the saddle at all. Plus, the post strung back up afterwards.
Choose carefully
The research shows that flexible bollards are generally the best option for bicycle safety. They are much better for cyclists.
There is an added bonus here too; flexible posts are also better for motorcycles, cars, and other road vehicles in various settings. Any impact with them will be gentler. That means less risk of damage to the infrastructure, vehicles, and road users.
Whatever bollard style it is, a crucial factor is to ensure the posts will be visible. Everybody should be able to see them clearly in any conditions, including low light and weathers when visibility is compromised.
There are a number of details to think about when it comes to visibility. Firstly, they need to be a suitable colour, ensuring they stand out from things like pavements and kerbs. Reflective features may be necessary to help with this. Secondly, they need to be a sufficient height. It must ensure that everyone can see them, factoring in the ride heights of different vehicles.
