Avoid leaving handrail ends open
Everyone knows that handrails are vital for ensuring people can move around safely. However, what they may not notice is some designs actually create a potential hazard. If a handrail is open at the end, it could lead to issues. We want to have a closer look at this today to see why you should avoid it.
What is it?
An open end literally means the rail does not connect to anything. Instead, it simply ends, sometimes with a decorative end piece.
The issue here is the open end can become a snag hazard. Because it is open, bag straps, clothing, walking sticks, and other things can get caught. If that happens and someone keeps walking without noticing, it can pull them back and cause a fall.
Alternatives
There are two better alternatives to open handrail ends. Firstly, you could connect the rail to a newel post. The posts are really useful for providing more stability for the rails. They can also be highly decorative, enhancing the aesthetics.
Secondly, you could have a wall return. What happens here is the railing connects to the wall itself, sometimes with a right angle end or a gentler angle. The latter can be a great way to avoid leaving a potentially sharp corner.
Advantages
A newel post or wall return is better than an open end handrail for a number of reasons. Most importantly, it is safer because there is no snag hazard. Just make sure if you do choose a newel that it doesn't have anything on top that could cause snagging.
Rails will also offer more support when they connect to a post or return to the wall. The connections give them more stability, especially if you compare to using brackets alone.
Finally, posts or wall returns improve accessibility. People with mobility limitations may struggle if the handrails simply end. However, they have an additional aid with the wall return section or post.

At Barrier Mart we want to make it as easy as possible to design handrails. We specialise in the key clamp system. What you do here is choose steel tubing for the rails and various components to create the system. There are fittings for any need, including elbows, tees, and base plates. The wall plates are especially good for ensuring the ends aren't open.
