Some ideas to help improve traffic management

Good traffic control is important to reduce congestion and the risk of accidents. There are a number of different things you can do here. Several revolve around being better at traffic management. Others focus on installing protection measures. What we want to do is have a look at some of the ones you could try.

Back to basics

Surprisingly, one of the biggest issues with managing traffic is people forget to do the basics. There are over 300 regulations in the Highway Code. Almost all of them are supported by laws. However, it is easy for people to forget them, especially when there are no reminders.

There are a number of crucial things you should crack down on to minimise the chance of congestion and accidents. Most importantly is ensuring there is no illegal parking, loading/unloading, and waiting. Whatever the situation, from the road outside a shop to a car park, you should make sure that people only stop and park in designated safe spaces.

In addition, you should enforce speed limits. One of the biggest risks in a car park or busy area is people speeding around. It can give them no time to react if someone steps out or another vehicle starts moving. So, you should make sure you have a limit in place as part of the traffic control measures and ensure people stick to it.

Look at the lighting

Bad lighting can cause both congestion problems and increase the risk of accidents. The problem is, when a space is not properly lit, drivers can't gauge what is happening around them very well. They also can't look very far ahead and take action as far in advance. So, there is a higher chance they can have an issue or get caught in traffic.

Reduce obstacles

A single obstacle can quickly create a huge amount of congestion and result in a higher risk of accidents. So, you should prioritise ensuring there are no obstacles.

An interesting thing you can do here is look to adapt the road layouts. There is less chance of issues if you stick with straight lines as much as possible. Turns and more indirect routes can cause a lot of trouble, particularly congestion. You can make traffic control easier by keeping layouts as simple as possible.

Deliveries

There is a higher chance of issues with commercial vehicles because of their size and limited mobility. You should try to minimise the problem by organising deliveries at quieter times. This could be earlier in the morning or later at night when there are fewer people on the roads.
